On September 24th, a vaccine was logged twice for the same dog: once from an iPhone, once from the website, by two people on the same kennel account, neither aware the other had already done it. Nothing on screen made it visible coming — the carnet never said who had written what.
What changes for you
- "Added by …" now appears under every carnet entry (vet visit, vaccination, medication, injury, heat cycle) whenever the author is known.
- "Edited on …" now also says who made the correction — on the website and on the phone.
- On the phone, the name comes from the roster already downloaded to the device: it shows even offline, as soon as sync has seen it once.
What others see
Exactly that, and that is the point: every kennel member sees who added or edited an entry, not just the owner. That is what would have made the September 24th duplicate visible before it happened.
What this does not do
- It does not prevent any duplicate. There is no "already logged" warning and no block on entry — the name makes a duplicate visible, it does not forbid it. Two people can have good reasons to log the same care.
- It still does not delete anything. The carnet stays built to never lose a health fact: no entry can be deleted, on either app. A duplicate is flagged by noting it in the extra entry's "notes" field.
- The name can stay missing — an account that left the kennel, or a phone whose roster has not synced yet. That is not a bug: showing nothing is better than showing an unreadable id.
These are not "not yet"s: a carnet that could block or erase would no longer be the same carnet.
The choice made against the obvious
We could have prevented the double entry instead of showing it — a warning, or a refusal, as soon as a similar fact already exists. That is not what was built: the carnet stays a record of declared facts, never an arbiter of what counts as "too many." It is for the musher to see it and judge it, not for the app to decide on their behalf that an entry should not exist.
